John,
When I first entered public service in 1996, I spent countless hours knocking on doors, meeting voters, and placing yard signs in every corner of my State Senate district. I made it my mission to connect with every single person I could — to listen, to learn, and to fight for the issues that mattered most to my neighbors.
But it wasn’t the first time I had run for office. I had run twice before — and lost! It was a humbling experience and taught me a valuable lesson in persistence.
Flash forward to today: I’m honored to now serve as California’s U.S. Senator. This journey, from a small district in California to representing our entire state, has been nothing short of extraordinary.
While the challenges have grown, so has my determination. I’m proud of all I have been able to deliver with governors and presidents of both parties — from new textbooks in schools, to a patient’s bill of rights, to funding for housing, healthcare, and an early earthquake warning system. Through relentless attacks from Trump, a partisan censure, and even being removed from the House Intelligence Committee, I’ve never wavered in my commitment to serve California and stand up for our democracy.

As I enter my new role as Senator, I’m reminded of how much work we still have to do: making the economy work for everyone and bringing down costs, protecting reproductive rights and addressing the climate crisis, and ensuring every Californian can afford a place to live.
