No beating around the bush on this one, John: Opponents of voting rights in the state legislature have approved a proposed constitutional amendment that asks North Carolinians to approve photo ID for those voting by mail. It only needs a majority vote in the 2026 general election to be added to the state constitution.

Current North Carolina law already requires ID for all forms of voting, so a voter has previously supplied their ID to register. But opponents of voting rights in North Carolina are worried about their suppressive laws being overturned when the new governor takes office next year, so they're looking to put voter suppression directly in their state constitution, where it will be harder to remove.

North Carolina's voter suppression laws -- dating back to 2018 -- are still being challenged in the courts. But we need to start talking to voters now about this constitutional amendment that they'll be voting on so that everyone knows what's at stake.
