Juneteenth is the oldest continuous celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were free. This was two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which became official January 1, 1863, well beyond the legal demise of the slavery system.
We mark this day to emphasize education and achievement, to recognize the importance of civic engagement and voter empowerment, and to acknowledge that freedom must always be fought for. Juneteenth is a day of reflection and rejoicing, and Barbara would be humbled to share this day with you — even if this year it's not in person.
Not only will you be supporting a progressive champion in the House Democratic Leadership, your contribution helps Barbara protect and expand our Democratic majority in the House!
We hope to see you there (virtually)!
