2024 Events Review!

This week we are featuring two of the events we held this year that focused on working families and children.

"Local 1196: A Steelworkers Strike" Screening at GQT Pittsburgh Mills Cinema in Tarentum

In March, we had a great turnout for the screening of "Local 1196: A Steelworkers Strike” at GQT Movie Theater in Frazer Township’s Pittsburgh Mills. We are so grateful to the Bertelsmann Foundation and The Battle of Homestead Foundation for co-sponsoring this incredible event. The film showcased the strength and bravery of the workers at ATI who stood up for themselves and their families as they fought for what we all deserve: a living wage, fair benefits, and dignity and respect in the workplace.

If you missed the screening, you can still see it at Local 1196: A Steelworkers Strike - WQED Specials - WQED!

Community Baby Shower in Natrona Heights

Community Baby Shower in Natrona Heights

In September we held our fifth community baby shower, and it remains one of the most joyous events of the year for me, my staff, vendors, and participants alike.

I’m so grateful to all of our vendors who came out to share information with local families and neighbors. A special thank you to the Sheldon Park Resident Council for partnering with us on this event, the Pittsburgh Fire Fighters for providing free winter coats for the kids, Beanie Paints Face Painter for her beautiful artwork, Russellton Palmer Pharmacy for providing flu shots, Soergel Orchards for the apples, and Curbside on the Run for the delicious cookies!

We're also deeply grateful to our anonymous gift donor. Because of their generosity, we had 20+ more raffle items for attendees. We can't wait for the next baby shower in 2025!

Addiction Recovery Ministry in
 Sharpsburg

Addiction Recovery Ministry in Sharpsburg

I was pleased to meet with the folks at the Addiction Recovery Ministry last Thursday to hear about their holistic approach to addiction ministry. It is good to know that anyone battling addiction has the support of organizations like this right here in Sharpsburg. If you or someone you love needs help with recovery, you are not alone. The holidays can be an especially difficult time of year, and support is available.

2024 Christmas Parade

Santa! I know him!

We had a jolly time at the Harrison Township Recreation Board 2024 Christmas Parade on Saturday! A special thank you to Santa and his elves for taking time out of their busy schedule to join the festivities and for letting us ride in his sleigh!

Legislative Update

Pennsylvania Must Protect
the Provisions of the Affordable Care Act

Pennsylvania Must Protect the Provisions of the Affordable Care Act

I’m joining Senator Vincent Hughes and all of my Senate Democratic colleagues in sponsoring three pieces of legislation that will enshrine the Affordable Care Act protections into law here in Pennsylvania. If enacted, no matter what happens at the federal level, every Pennsylvanian would be guaranteed coverage for pre-existing conditions. All health insurance plans sold here would have to cover basic necessary services like ER visits, labs, prescriptions, preventative/wellness care, and more. And lifetime and annual limits would be banned here.

I believe healthcare is a basic human right and that the policy choices our country makes should reflect that right. You shouldn’t need to be wealthy to afford access to a doctor. These measures alone won’t fix our broken healthcare system. But they’re a first step to ensure that every Pennsylvanian has basic access to care.
