A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

The Council’s initial budget proposals for next year have been published in a report being considered by the *_Executive Board [ [link removed] ]_* next week before views are sought from local residents, businesses and partner organisations as part of an extensive six-week public consultation.

The proposals are about getting our house in order and putting the Council on a sustainable financial footing

We know that the people of Nottingham want a council that gets the basics right and delivers the best local services we can afford, while also looking to the future so the city reaches its full potential.

As a council, we continue to face huge pressures in caring for the elderly and disabled, supporting families and looking after children in our care and homelessness. Together these pressures are squeezing out other services.

Taking the tough decisions to lead the city forward doesn’t mean we can’t afford to be ambitious. It means we can’t afford not to be.

This week, a progress report has been issued Government-appointed Commissioners to oversee improvements at the Council. The report outlines the significant progress the Council is making but we know there is still much work to do to bring about the change needed.

Commissioners have highlighted the firm cooperative working relationship they have with the Council and that we have welcomed them constructively and established a positive and productive approach to engaging with them.

The fact that Commissioners have so far not needed to use any of the powers they have available with the full council to make change clearly demonstrates that they feel we are heading in the right direction and that we understand what needs to be done.

But we are under no illusions about the challenges ahead, in particular that we are operating considerably beyond our means.

Our Budget proposals for next year and our ongoing Improvement Plan will give the Council financial sustainability for the years ahead, ensuring we put our house in order and get the basics right. We need a 'one council' approach and each and every member of staff have a part to play in achieving this.

We want to deliver a renewed council providing the high-quality services that local people expect and deserve from us and which has an ambitious vision for leading the city forward.

Broad Marsh site 2022

Council waits to hear on £3.4m funding bid for Broad Marsh site

Nottingham City Council has applied for a £3.4m grant to allow further demolition of the former Broad Marsh shopping centre.

The funding will be used to carry out partial demolition of a section of the frame near to the recently-opened Green Heart. This would then enable works to start on the Broad Marsh masterplan to transform a key part of the city centre.

The Council has bid for the money from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), which is meeting next Monday (16 December) to discuss the award as part of a potential wider allocation of £9.5m to councils and organisations across the region [ [link removed] ].

Nottingham’s buses continue to lead the way

New data from the Department for Transport, released recently has revealed that Nottingham’s bus network is continuing to go from strength-to-strength post-covid. 

Nottingham saw a 10% rise in passenger figures versus 2023 – an incredible feat for a city which has had a strong and popular bus network for decades.  

To ensure that both bus and tram networks could thrive in the city, Nottingham City Council continue to work with NET and the bus operators to plan how bus and tram routes could integrate rather than compete with each other.

Jumper swap

Big Christmas Jumper Swap a festive success!

Our Big Christmas Jumper Swap was a wonderful celebration of community spirit, sustainability, and festive cheer. Generous donations from collection boxes at Woodthorpe Plant Shop and Homemade Café helped to ensure that we had a fantastic selection of Christmas jumpers in all sizes ready for swapping.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the children’s storytelling sessions, which saw an impressive 42 bookings and even more families dropping in to join the fun. The sessions were filled with laughter, joy, and a magical atmosphere, making it an unforgettable experience for children and parents alike.

Adding to the buzz, we were thrilled to welcome coverage from *BBC Radio Nottingham, BBC East Midlands, *and *Nottingham Trent University *who helped showcase this fantastic community event to a wider audience. Their support amplified the importance of recycling, reusing, and celebrating a greener Christmas.

This event was more than just a jumper swap; it was a celebration of community, sustainability, and inclusivity during the festive season. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who donated, promoted, and attended, making this event a success.

Local business on the road to net zero after grant from our Workplace Travel Service team

A Nottingham-based print company is going greener thanks to a grant from Nottingham City Council’s Workplace Travel Service

The grant will supercharge John E Wright’s efforts to initially install five EV chargers at their NG2 site in readiness for a rollout of electric vans.

The company first applied for a grant online, before speaking with Peter Saunders who oversees the Workplace Travel Service project.

Alan Edwards, Technical Director at John E Wright said “The application process was a breeze and was helped in all aspects along the route by Peter – twice!”

“The 5 new EV chargers mean that our Nottingham HQ is now ready for the rollout of electric vans. Getting a large contribution to the installation costs via the Workplace Travel Service has been really helpful.”

Following a review of the application by the Workplace Travel Service panel, 2 grants totalling £25,000 were awarded. John E Wright paid 25% of the cost, plus VAT, with the remaining 75% coming from the Government’s Local Transport Plan and Nottingham’s Workplace Parking Levy, which means businesses and organisations in Nottingham are supported with sustainable workplace travel improvements at no cost to the Council.

This Girl Can Nottingham 2024 Awards

The winners of the This Girl Can Nottingham 2024 Awards were revealed during a
celebratory evening that recognised the achievements of women in the physical
activity sector within the Nottingham community.

The top achievers were honoured during the awards ceremony, which took place at
the Nottingham Council House on 21 November 2024, with over 120 finalists, guests
and community partners in attendance.

The awards, sponsored by Reward with an Award and Matt Bradbury, were hosted by
Charmaine Daley, the Workforce Development Officer for This Girl Can Nottingham,
who kicked off the evening with a lively conga to lift everyone's spirits and highlighted
the impressive nominees selected across eight different categories.

This year's This Girl Can Nottingham Awards saw an impressive total of 154
nominees, with judges commending the exceptional quality of the applicants and the
remarkable accomplishments showcased by all the finalists.
