Earlier this year, Rob joined a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general
and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to file a lawsuit to stop the $24.6
billion merger between the two largest supermarket chains, Kroger and
Albertsons.
Yesterday, a federal judge blocked the merger.
This is a major win for workers and consumers: had the merger gone
through, the reduced competition would’ve meant fewer choices and higher
prices for shoppers in California and nationwide. In some Southern
California communities, it could have become the ONLY one-stop grocery
store option.
Not only would this merger have hurt consumers, but it could have also
left workers with fewer employment opportunities and worse working
conditions, and created negative impacts for farmers.
