Dear
Friend,
Last
email we talked about safe communities and how, when organizing for
reproductive justice, we must always center the most marginalized
community members, especially in times of crisis. The CARES Act, passed to provide relief
during COVID-19, left out more than 11 million people because they are
undocumented immigrants.
This is wrong.
All
immigrants, regardless of their legal status, are important members of
our communities. America has exploited their labor for centuries and
our nation runs on Black and Brown labor. This is further reinforced
by the criminal justice system that incarcerates thousands of people
of color and profits from their low and often unpaid labor.
The Trump
administration has initiated new levels of state violence,
suppression, and denial of human rights of immigrants. These actions
include increased and inhumane detention, incarceration, and
deportation. To have a just society, we must put an end to state and
interpersonal violence against communities of color, including
detention, incarceration, and deportation; dismantle white supremacy
and uplift human rights, reproductive justice, and economic justice
for people of color. Immigrant Justice IS reproductive
justice!

our policy recommendations for how we can achieve immigrant
justice.
One thing
you can do right now to help create a safer community for immigrants
during the pandemic is to share our Youth Demands for COVID-19 Relief
action with your state and
federal elected officials. Local governments have the power and
discretion to allocate funds how they see fit. We need your help to
hold your local and state officials accountable and demand they
allocate direct payments for undocumented immigrants who did not
receive any relief from the CARES Stimulus. Email
Jazmin Gonzalez, our Digital Campaigns Manager, for more information
and next steps you can take today.
Thank you
for following along and learning about our Young People’s Policy
Agenda. For more updates on policy happenings across our states and
federally, please remember to join me Monday, May 25th, at 4pm EDT on
URGE’s Instagram. Until then, please stay safe and do what
you can to take care of others by practicing social
distancing.
