John, I’m Mark Bayer, PFLAG National’s Regional Director for the South Atlantic Region. I’m a cisgender gay man, father, nursing professional, and community advocate in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. I grew up in the buckle of the bible belt in rural South Carolina. As a young person, I was conflicted knowing that I was gay and wanting to be a dad. It was a time when society kept telling me that I was wrong, an abomination, and couldn’t be a parent; I believed them. As an adult, I voluntarily went through multiple conversion therapy programs, including electroshock therapy—a horrific experience. I couldn’t keep going on like this. That’s when I found the phone number for my local PFLAG chapter in Myrtle Beach. That call saved my life. I talked with someone who simply told me I wasn’t alone, that I mattered, and that I was worthy of love. After that call, I finally had the courage to leave conversion therapy behind, and since then, I’ve had an incredible journey. Today, I’m married to the love of my life, Mike, and a proud parent to three amazing sons. Being a dad is everything to me, and I am beyond grateful for the relationship I now enjoy with my parents, who love and support our family. Four years ago, I decided to give back to the organization that made an impact on my life by co-founding PFLAG Pawleys Island. Recently, I elevated my service to the national level as a Regional Director, supporting chapters in the South Atlantic region. Whenever someone calls us, we must always answer the call. I urge you to answer the call by making a year-end gift to PFLAG National to help more LGBTQ+ people and their loved ones. Thank you for reading my story. I’m proud to be part of the PFLAG family with you. Gratefully, |
