Friend, Trump knows how extreme his cabinet nominees are and that they would face serious opposition even from some Senate Republicans. Now he may resort to a different strategy altogether to get them in office. Trump has demanded that the Senate recess so he can push through his nominees for cabinet positions without hearings or a vote. This raises a lot of red flags. Sign on to the petition urging the Senate to stand strong and not bend to Trump’s will! >> Trump has leaned on the Republican-controlled Congress to recess in early January so that he can push through his far-right MAGA nominees. Under this scheme, an entire infrastructure of oppression could be imposed on our nation in an instant without our consent. There would be no vetting by senators or by the American people they are supposed to represent. This scheme would keep us from finding out vitally important information about the officials who will be making crucial decisions for the federal government. This approach is so extreme that even former conservative Justice Antonin Scalia would have opposed it. A decade ago, he wrote, “The only remaining practical use for the recess appointment power is the [dishonorable] one of enabling presidents to circumvent the Senate’s role in the appointment process.”[1] Urge the Senate to reject Trump’s attempts to undermine our democracy! >> As a part of the regular nomination process, nominees have to fill out Senate questionnaires that reveal what they’ve written and said in the past, as well as the groups they’re associated with. They’re subject to intensive background investigations. Senate committees hold hearings to weigh the merits of each nominee. The committee votes and then the full Senate votes. But recess appointments would bypass ALL of that. There would be no way for the American people to learn about the nominees Trump would give power to. It is crucial to our democracy that we resist this plan. Add your name to demand the Senate stand firm and uphold the nomination process! >> Thank you for raising your voice on this issue. -People For the American Way
