In a Real Democracy, Everyone Should Fight Fair.

Dear John,

People wrote us off when we first said that Nigel Farage could be Prime Minister in 2029. It seemed ludicrous that a massively unpopular figure, who’s so clearly in it for the grift, could ascend to an actual position of power. But then again, they said the same thing to those who warned about the return of Donald Trump.

Despite Keir Starmer’s loveless Parliamentary landslide, right-wing populism is resurgent. We warned back in July that they weren’t going away. They’re using this time to radicalise their supporters. To spread fear and lies on platforms like X. To bring in billionaire cash from across the Atlantic.

Yesterday, we learned of a dark deal between Reform UK and the Conservatives. Determined to topple Starmer’s unpopular government, local branches from both parties are reportedly in discussions about tactical arrangements ahead of the May 2025 local elections.

Notably, a national pact has still been ruled out. But the local-level pact may enable Reform UK to secure more seats at the next General Election, or at the least push the Conservatives further towards the populist right – as they did for Boris Johnson back in 2019.

Then there’s the polling. Reform has surged a whopping 9.3 points according to the latest General Election intention poll from FindOutNow. Farage’s party is entering territory that can actually win general elections under First-Past-The-Post (albeit with a minority of the vote). According to the betting markets, Nigel Farage has the best odds of becoming the UK’s next Prime Minister.

If the majority of this country decides that’s really what they want, then so be it – that’s democracy.

But Elon Musk shouldn’t be able to supercharge false claims on X, spreading conspiracies and lies. Nor should he be permitted to individually bankroll an entire political party’s election campaign with a $100 million donation. Perhaps we also shouldn’t have an electoral system that could grant Farage a large majority of seats without a majority of votes (as it just did for Keir Starmer).

If the far-right want to win power in this country, they must do it without dark funds or dirty tricks. They must win on a level playing field. As it stands, our democracy privileges the voices of a small powerful elite over those of regular Britons.

Powerful social media owners like Musk are able to unilaterally drive public debate. They decide which content gets viewed and what gets ignored. No one person should force their political views on the public square.

Thanks to our shoddy campaign finance laws, vested interests have an outsized say in our elections, pumping foreign funds into campaigns, crowding out regular voters, and expecting policy favours in return.

Our FPTP system may give parties like Reform more seats, but it’s currently privileging a minority of voters and failing to accurately reflect the will of the public. PR may help Farage in Parliament – but FPTP is more likely to put him in Government (two very different things).

Open Britain – alongside our civil society allies and a record number of Parliamentarians – are calling on the government to make politics a level playing field. We’re further along in this fight than any democracy campaign has made it in years.

This government still doesn’t have a plan, but we do. Only with your support can we see it through, starting with the immediate goals of the APPG for Fair Elections. Can you help us get there?

All the best,

Matt
