Friend, When Congress passed the first round of COVID-19 relief packages, they left undocumented families with nothing. Children, mothers, and tax-paying immigrant workers were explicitly excluded from receiving aid in this time of crisis. Many of our immigrant grassroots leaders are feeling immense economic stress due to the pandemic. Gladys from Faith in New Jersey shared how her mixed-status family was left out of the CARES relief package, “I am an immigrant. My daughter is a Dreamer, and my husband is a US Citizen. I’ve paid taxes for 22 years and right now none of us will get a stimulus check. It seems to me that the government is imposing on my husband, an American born citizen, a penalty for marrying someone who was undocumented. How is that right? How is that fair?” |
