Data are more than numbers. They represent people’s and communities’ lived experiences and offer a deeper understanding of the barriers impeding economic mobility and equity. It is this understanding that drives Urban to develop interactive data tools to provide policymakers with the insights they need to help alleviate the immediate and systemic challenges in their municipalities.
Challenges like medical debt, which affects millions of people, can intensify financial hardships and worsen health outcomes. As local leaders develop strategies to tackle these challenges, Urban experts build products like the “Changing Medical Debt Landscape in the United States” interactive data tool to guide changemakers toward powerful solutions.
This resource pulls data from sources across the country, down to the county level, allowing policymakers and residents to understand their regions’ debt drivers. It also helps them garner insights they can use to create meaningful interventions that reduce burdens in their communities. We‘ve seen this in places like Oklahoma, which shows among the highest rates of medical debt in collections in the nation. This year, lawmakers there used Urban’s debt tools to better understand their state’s landscape and work toward addressing its challenges.
You are integral to this work. When leaders, from federal policymakers to grassroots organizers, can access the on-demand insights needed to uncover and address obstacles in their communities, families gain opportunities to build a better future.
All best,
