I'm Ilona Brand, managing director of technology at MoveOn.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Ilona Brand, managing director of technology at MoveOn. I've never emailed you before, but I'm doing so today to update you on one of the biggest changes MoveOn has ever made in our 26-year history.

Over the last few years, a giant overseas private equity fund operating under the corporate name "Bonterra" has been acquiring the most important technology platforms and tools used by MoveOn and much of the rest of the progressive movement.1

These are the crucial tools that allow MoveOn members to sign petitions, send emails to Congress, donate money to power the fight, sign up for protests and other events, and more.

Now, the lifeblood of MoveOn's progressive action is at the whim of a greedy corporate giant. Already, the effects have been devastating: Last year, Bonterra laid off roughly one-third of its staff, jeopardizing the progressive movement's ability to organize—all so Bonterra's wealthy investors could pad their pockets.

That's why MoveOn is making a huge, massive, unprecedented change: We are leaving Bonterra's ActionKit platform and shifting over to a new platform called "Action Network," which was developed by a nonprofit tech organization with its roots in the labor movement.

Shifting our millions of files and trillions of bytes of data is enormously complicated and takes thousands of hours of time from data scientists and engineers. It's also hugely expensive for us, given the complexity of the data and our systems and the sheer amount of data.

That's why I need your urgent support to make the transition happen seamlessly and securely. Will you donate $9 today to help free MoveOn from being at the whim of a giant corporation and transition to a nonprofit-governed platform?

John, the move away from Bonterra isn't easy. For the past 26 years, MoveOn has been using its technology to store all of the data that powers our work—including our ability to send you this very email.

But the move is 100% necessary. Because MoveOn should never, ever be at the whim of a corporate giant.

I need your help to make a safe and seamless transition to our new technology platform. Will you make a $9 donation today to ensure MoveOn's data systems are managed by a progressive nonprofit tech organization, not an overseas private equity firm?

I'm very confident in our ability to make this transition with your support and the support of MoveOn members across the country.

Thanks for all you do.

–Ilona
