John,
Yesterday, I was in Loudon County to support Vote Pro-Choice endorsed Virginia legislative candidates Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh on the first day of in-person early voting. This past Sunday, The New York Times published a piece framing these upcoming special elections in Virginia as a litmus test for the road ahead:
Indeed, the turn-out and results of these elections will be scrutinized by both parties for signs of what to expect in high profile races ahead. But these races are more than just a political thermometer: they may also determine legislative control of Virginia for three years, with the constitutional right to abortion hanging in the balance. They’re extremely consequential contests.
Next year’s elections – from the state leg in Virginia to the governor’s race in Michigan to the state supreme court election in Wisconsin and everything in between – will all showcase how our movement decided to iterate and improve in response to the 2024 results.
Will we meaningfully invest in voter registration after this past year’s weakest voter registration edge in decades?
Will voter education help to reduce the turn-out gap between pro-choice policies and the candidates who champion them?
And will we continue to hone our messaging, recognizing that the threats to reproductive freedom are different in every state, and we must act accordingly?
Our team believes that with strategic investments, we can win vital victories and build the political infrastructure necessary to come back stronger in the midterms. But as others have emphasized in the weeks since the election, that work cannot wait.
That’s why we’re proud to be on the ground in Virginia this week with our first endorsed 2025 candidates—because our work to protect reproductive freedom happens all year, every year.
Your support is what allows us to continue the fight—thank you for staying in this work with us.
Warmly,
Sara Tabatabaie
