Fight the Heist Coalition of Garment Workers and Allies is Growing

Our Fight the Heist Campaign with Asia Floor Wage Alliance has taken off this year, bringing together garment workers across South and Southeast with a growing coalition of allies in US Labor. In July, hundreds of allies took action across 6 cities in the US and in October women workers from Nike’s supply chain launched their “Put us in your ad!” video.

GLJ and IUF Launch Website Focused on Development Finance Investments in Hotels

GLJ and the IUF have launched a new website, “Accountable Development Finance: Hospitality”, a powerful resource for unions, partners and allies in the fight to ensure workers’ rights are respected at hotels financed by the IFC and other development finance institutions (DFIs). The site contains all DFI investments from the last 25 years, information on workers’ rights violations and a proposed policy solution.

Dindigul Agreement Continues to Deliver for Workers

Cornell University’s Global Labor Institute released the Year Two Progress Report, concluding there is “overwhelming evidence that the Dindigul Agreement is meeting the goals for which it was created.” The report demonstrates that Freedom of Association plus union supported worker shop floor monitors and business leverage from brands powerfully remediates and prevents gender-based violence and harassment. The agreement also protects against caste and migration status based discrimination at the intersection of GBVH.

New Website on Global Action to Address GBVH in World of Work

At the start of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, GLJ and partner organizations in the C190 Arc Task Force launched a website sharing information and action on how global labor and women’s rights organizations are working to address gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH), in line with ILO Convention 190 (C190), the first international treaty to address violence and harassment in the world of work.

Growing Justice at Fyffes

GLJ, the IUF and Honduran union STAS have launched a new website to chronicle melon workers’ fight for international labor rights at Fyffes farms. “Growing Justice: Workers Fight for Good Jobs on Fyffes Farms” details the wins and challenges the mostly women workers have experienced. STAS also released a new report on the state of working conditions at Fyffes and renewed their calls for better conditions and democratic representation under the independent union STAS.

Wi-Fi Campaign Intensifies Fight for Fishers’ Rights

At industry conferences, the Wi-Fi campaign, with FOSPI and allies, has urged seafood brands and suppliers to address labor abuse in their supply chains. We’ve urged Taiwanese and Indonesian governments to negotiate labor and migration agreements that protect fishers’ rights. We collaborated with the “You Fu Ten” fishers to secure payment after incidents of forced labor and wage theft. During recent typhoons in Taiwan, we demanded the safe evacuation of fishers.

Cotton Campaign calls on Uzbek Government to Protect Freedoms of Association and Expression

The call follows a public commitment by high-level Uzbek government to continue engagement with the Cotton Campaign coalition to improve progress in the cotton and textile industry. We welcome this commitment and have urged the government to make it a reality by taking concrete actions to protect independent monitoring and reporting on labor rights, eliminate restrictions on freedom of association, and increase farmers’ autonomy.

Coalition Brings Migrant Perspectives to UN Meeting on Qatar

In August, the Coalition on Labor Justice for Migrants in the Gulf was in Geneva for the 47th Universal Periodic Review (UPR) pre-session. Coalition partner Equidem was selected as one of three civil society representatives from around the world to speak on a panel ahead of Qatar’s November review – bringing migrant workers' perspectives from their research  into a policy process that  lacks worker engagement.

International Labour Review Publishes “Regulatory design and interactions in worker-driven social responsibility initiatives: the Dindigul Agreement”

The article by Professors Judy Fudge and Genevieve LeBaron highlights that the Dindigul Agreement “has pioneered a new approach to [GBVH] remediation centering on unions” and calls the Agreement “unique” among enforceable supply chain agreements in its focus on freedom of association and the role of local unions in remediating labor abuses.

Recognizing the Life and Legacy of Diana Baker

GLJ wants to recognize a significant gift received this season from the estate of Diana Baker. For over a decade, Diana was a steadfast supporter of GLJ and our work to build worker power to hold corporations and governments accountable in global supply chains. Her support for our U.S. Labor Education in the Americas Project is helping to support Honduran farmworkers fighting for good jobs and an independent union on Fyffes farms. We are honored to be part of Diana’s legacy and will carry her commitment to justice and dignity for people with us into 2025.
