Dear John,

There is no question that all educators, parents and, frankly, students want desperately to go back to schools next fall. But that can only happen when we can all go back safely. That’s why our national affiliate, the National Education Association, is asking that you help by signing up at nea.org/covidaction.

The COVID-19 pandemic will change all our lives in ways we are unable to imagine. But we cannot sit and wring our hands. We must plan, prepare and mobilize to advocate for what we know students and educators need— especially by focusing on the deep negative impacts for students based on race and those experiencing deep poverty or living in rural, isolated communities. FEA members along with NEA and AFT members from across the U.S. are coming together with families and communities to demand that Congress:

  • Stabilize education funding for students in our community schools, and campuses.
  • Build bridges for educational opportunity for students and stronger communities.
  • Support the safety, health and well-being of students and educators.
TAKE ACTION
To help states as they weather what could be the worst economic downturn in U.S. history, educators and parents are demanding that Congress to act quickly to support schools and students with the federal funding they need to succeed.

Last week the U.S. House passed the HEROES Act, the next coronavirus relief bill. While the bill is not perfect, but it does include more resources to help our public schools, students, educators and communities rise together from COVID-19, including:
  • $915 billion in state and local aid to address budget gaps (can be used to help public schools)
  • Plus $100 billion specifically for K-12 and higher ed
  • $1.5 billion to address digital divide and homework gap that impacts far too many students, especially in communities of color.
The Senate must support at least the level of funding for students in the bill and pass it quickly. Please help by signing up as an activist today!
