** Dear John,
------------------------------------------------------------
We wanted to share a quick uplifting story with you.
I am a Health Network Associate with Migrant Clinicians Network at the US Southern Border, where Brenda Ramirez, a fellow Health Network Associate, and I team up with a midwife to assist pregnant asylum seekers who have just been released from detention. We enroll pregnant patients in Health Network, MCN’s virtual patient management system, because finding prenatal care – in a new country, with an entirely different health system, in a new language, with no money, resources, or connection -- can be near impossible on your own.
Many of our patients here at the border are families. Recently, we enrolled a wonderful young woman. While the midwife examined her – it may have been the first prenatal care she received, even though she was in her third trimester – her daughter drew me a picture!
The little girl, with her mother, are originally from Haiti. After a multi-year migration, they are thrilled to reunite with family on the East Coast. The little girl said she was learning English before they made the trek to the United States, but that her family never thought they'd actually ever make it to the US so she didn't continue learning. I told her that now she was going to need to continue learning since they were here and she was so excited. But her language skills already shine: throughout their time in the US so far, this child was acting as the interpreter from Spanish to Haitian Creole for her mother, who does not speak English or Spanish. In her drawing, you can see she wrote my name (“En”), Brenda, and Isa, our midwife.
You can feel the love!
So far in 2024, we helped over 1,300 migrants including this little girl – people who needed health care but were moving. We connect them directly with care at health centers, link them with specialty care if needed, and make sure they can access resources and services for which they’re eligible, like food assistance and sliding scale fees.
This work is so important. No one else is doing this work, for migrants moving anywhere in the world, with an urgent health need.
The political environment is extremely challenging for asylum seekers, but we are deeply dedicated to removing the barriers to care so that everyone, regardless of their immigration status, can access quality, compassionate, and culturally attuned health care when they need it.
It’s more important than ever that we reach our $50,000 goal this year to make sure we can bolster our migrant health programs in the coming year. You can donate in honor of another mother or fellow immigrant – or you can just make sure your dollars go to the programs that need it most. Please help us serve more children, more families, more asylum seekers – donate to Migrant Clinicians Network today.
