New ‘Know Your Rights’ materials

All people in the United States have rights, regardless of immigration status. NIJC has created new 'Know Your Rights' resources to help our community members prepare for a number of scenarios and assert their rights in these uncertain times.

Our resources outline how to: 1) Prepare for President-elect Trump's mass deportation threats, 2) Defend your rights in an encounter with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and 3) Avoid immigration fraud.

You can also access all our 'Know Your Rights' materials here

Advocates call on Biden to end immigration detention

We are proud to join nearly 200 advocacy groups urging President Biden to take rapid action to close immigration detention centers before President-elect Trump takes office.

Amidst documented, widespread abuse and medical neglect in detention centers, we are pushing for President Biden to shutdown detention facilities, reduce ICE's detention capacity, and grant humanitarian parole to people who are detained.

NIJC works to assist asylum seekers and explore all legal options

After people arrive in the United States, they only have one year to apply for asylum.

IN THE NEWS: In an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, NIJC Director of Legal Services Lisa Koop spoke about how important it is for people to determine their eligibility for asylum before filing to avoid complications and maximize success.

“If you don’t win asylum, you can get a deportation order," she said. "It may be better for that person to not begin this process and explore other legal options or wait for changes in the law rather than use the asylum system as sort of a catchall for people.”

Help protect Vicky

Vicky, a transgender woman, came to the U.S. from Honduras as a teenager seeking safety after being threatened for her identity. In 2022, ICE placed her in detention for two years where she experienced abuse, segregation, and isolation for her identity.

NIJC is representing Vicky, who is now out of ICE detention and still fighting for protection. Through the years she has built a community of caring people, and they have started a GoFundMe to help her pay for safe housing and living expenses.

Listen to Vicky share her story on the 70 Million podcast (season 6, episodes 4 and 5) and donate to Vicky’s GoFundMe campaign so she can fight her immigration case with her legal team by her side and build a safe and liberated life.

Ten people receive legal aid at recent arrivals workshop

Ten people attended our free workshop with Winston & Strawn LLP, to get help applying for asylum after recently arriving in the United States. Thanks to our amazing legal volunteers and NIJC staff who made sure the room was full and even screened participants' friends who ended up being eligible for asylum too. Send a message to welcome our new neighbors on social media!

Celebrating our successes at the NIJC Justice Celebration

We had a wonderful time bonding with our community and celebrating the dedication of pro bono attorneys and donors and the impact we've had together at the NIJC Justice Celebration. We awarded Carly Allen (Smith Gambrell Russell) and Panagiota Ramos (Goldman Ismail Tomaselli Brennan & Baum LLP) with the Rookie of the Year Award and the Magda Slowik Award for Professional Excellence.

We'd also like to thank our hosts DLA Piper and the NIJC Associate Leadership Council for organizing the event. Your support has allowed more than 11,000 people to receive life-changing legal services last year. Check out these great snapshots from this special event
