As the year draws to a close, we find ourselves at a critical juncture for religious freedom in our country.

Imagine losing your job and being denied unemployment benefits because of your deeply held religious beliefs. This is the reality for Alison Lavelle-Hayden, a dedicated respiratory therapist in Oregon.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Alison, a devout Seventh-day Adventist, faced a difficult decision. Due to her religious convictions opposing the vaccine's connection to abortion, she requested a religious exemption from the state's vaccine mandate for healthcare workers. Her request was denied, and she was subsequently fired from her position at Legacy Health’s Good Samaritan Hospital.

When Alison applied for unemployment benefits, she was denied—twice. The Employment Appeals Board questioned the sincerity of her religious beliefs, disregarding overwhelming evidence and clear protections under the Constitution.

The Pacific Justice Institute (PJI) is standing with Alison, appealing her case to the Oregon Court of Appeals.

This fight is not just about one person's rights; it's about defending religious freedom for all.
