The newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will recommend where to cut wasteful government spending. It should start with the $850 billion defense budget for 2025, which accounts for over half of federal spending.

The U.S. spends nearly $1 trillion annually on defense, with half the budget going to defense contractors. Due to a lack of competition and the Pentagon’s ineffective price monitoring, major corporations are overcharging the Department of Defense and bleeding taxpayers dry in the process.

The U.S. has the greatest military in the world. Period. But we need to make smart investments in national security, not just big investments. That’s why I’ve been the sole dissenting vote against the defense budget in the House Armed Services Committee. I know we can do better than this.

We have a responsibility to use Americans’ tax dollars wisely. I look forward to working with the Department of Government Efficiency to reduce waste and fraud at the Pentagon while defending programs like Social Security, Medicare, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
