North Carolina Board of Elections rejects Griffin’s 60k ballot challenges

  • The North Carolina Board of Elections voted today to reject over 60,000 ballot challenges from state Supreme Court GOP candidate Jefferson Griffin.

  • This follows an announcement from the election board yesterday that Democratic incumbent Justice Allison Riggs defeated Griffin in a partial hand recount — the second and final recount of the race.

  • In a new YouTube video, Marc and Democracy Docket’s Paige Moskowitz discuss the recounts, Griffin's ballot challenges and why he won't concede.

GOP legislators in North Carolina enact anti-voting law

  • This evening, North Carolina GOP legislators overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s (D) veto of a bill that will negatively impact voting rights. Senate Bill 382 will take the power to appoint election board members away from the governor — which will soon be Josh Stein (D) — and hand it to the state’s Republican auditor general.

  • The legislation will also limit the attorney general’s ability to bring lawsuits against the legislature and shorten the curing period for absentee ballots.

Project 2025 contributor outlines how Trump can roll back voting rights

  • Project 2025 contributor and right-wing lawyer Hans von Spakovsky outlined how President-elect Donald Trump’s administration can use the federal government to roll back ballot access and make it easier for states to purge voters.

Oral arguments coming up tomorrow

  • The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral argument in a right-wing lawsuit challenging Maryland’s voter roll procedures and election system. The conservative group behind the case appealed the dismissal of its lawsuit.

  • Oral argument will be heard in a lawsuit from pro-voting groups challenging Alaska’s refusal to address ballot curing problems that disenfranchised over 5,000 voters in a 2022 special election, allegedly violating the state constitution.
