The False Promise of Government-Run Health Care

A government guarantee of health insurance may sound great. But what good is a Medicare card if you can’t put it to use? Having access to a government health plan is not the same as having access to care.

I have firsthand experience with this reality. I was born and raised in Canada, which has subjected its citizens to single-payer health care for six decades. My mother died after the government forced her to wait for care. I’ve seen how single-payer health care works — or more accurately, doesn’t work.

Drug Price Controls Threaten Cancer Cures

A federal judge in New Jersey recently dismissed a lawsuit seeking to strike down the Inflation Reduction Act’s program of price controls for prescription drugs dispensed through Medicare. It was the fifth suit of its kind to fail this year.

Democrats have cheered the IRA’s price controls for supposedly making drugs more accessible to seniors. But they have an insidious downside. By slowing the pace of new drug innovation, price controls will seriously harm Americans with cancer now and in the future.

A Year Later, Florida's Drug Importation Plan is as Misguided as Ever

When president-elect Donald Trump joked about making Canada the 51st state, he had an unlikely supporter: Bernie Sanders.

“Does that mean that we can adopt the Canadian health care system and . . . lower the cost of prescription drugs,” the Vermont senator wrote on X. “I’m all for it.”

It’s unlikely that Sanders wants the United States to launch a new era of North American imperialism. But he has long pushed for the United States to adopt Canada’s healthcare system, including its price controls on prescription drugs. Failing that, he’d love to import those price controls by allowing Americans to buy drugs from our northern neighbors directly.

Here again, Sanders is on the same side as a prominent Republican.
