Designing the COVID-19 Recovery for a Safer and More Resilient World

Stimulus packages that address climate change and prioritize efficiency, equality, and resilience are likely to have higher returns than those that merely shore up past investment. As with pandemics, early action on climate reduces risks and slashes costs. A new WRI commentary by Joaquim Levy, former Brazil finance minister and managing director of the World Bank, and WRI Senior Fellows Carter Brandon and Rogerio Studart, goes beyond the headlines to lay out seven concrete ways that finance ministers can overcome the pandemic’s economic impacts while also preventing runaway climate change. Regenerative Agriculture: Good for Soil Health, but Limited Potential to Mitigate Climate Change

Regenerative agriculture—practices that improve soil health by restoring organic carbon—is the new darling of politicians, food companies and farmers seeking win-win policies that reduce emissions. Think again, says Janet Ranganathan, WRI Vice President for Research, Data and Innovation. Tracking Africa Locust Swarms with Resource Watch

WRI Vice President and Regional Director for Africa Wanjira Mathai says that locust swarms threatening food security in the Horn of Africa, made worse by unseasonal rains, are “another reminder of how climate change poses a clear and present danger,” worsening the impacts of COVID-19. Tina Huang presents new Resource Watch maps that provide near-real-time data on locust swarms, food price spikes, Global Hunger Index rankings and more, enabling government officials and relief agencies to quickly identify hotspots and minimize the impacts. Read more.
