Right now, firefighters are battling a fast-moving wildfire in Malibu, California, John. As of yesterday, the Franklin fire consumed more than 3,900 acres, destroyed at least seven homes, and displaced thousands of residents.
This year has already been catastrophic for climate-fueled disasters across the U.S. From the deadly flooding in North Carolina after Hurricane Helene to the destructive South Fork Fire in New Mexico, communities from coast to coast have endured life-changing climate-related disasters. It’s heartbreaking to see yet another community bearing the brunt.
In 2018, Donald Trump refused to approve disaster aid for California wildfires until his advisors convinced him there were enough Trump voters in the affected areas. He even directed special treatment for politically favorable regions while stalling critical aid for others.
And with Donald Trump returning to the White House next month, there’s every reason to fear disaster relief will once again be treated as a political weapon.
That’s why we’re demanding the incoming administration commit to distributing disaster relief fairly and swiftly. They must promise to never again play politics with people’s lives. Add your name to demand disaster relief without political games.
Disasters don’t care about party affiliation. Homes are burning. Families are displaced. And every single person impacted deserves relief, no matter how they voted.
California has weathered fire after fire, and our communities know what it takes to rebuild. But whether Californians will receive federal help or not should NEVER be a concern in the midst of tragedy.
Together, we can hold Washington accountable. We can demand leadership that puts people first, not partisan loyalty. Add your name today to send a clear message: Disaster relief isn’t a bargaining chip.
In solidarity,
Team JanePAC
