“Mattress Mack doing well after open-heart surgery, constable says,” Houston Chronicle's John Lomax V — “Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale is out of the hospital after undergoing open-heart surgery Tuesday, according to a social media post made by the Precinct 4 Constable's Office.
The 73-year-old owner of Gallery Furniture said in a video on social media that he had a "leaky mitral valve," which prompted the operation. Although McIngvale said that he would be at the hospital for roughly a week after the surgery, the Houston furniture mogul appeared in an image alongside Precinct 4 deputies outside the north Houston Gallery Furniture location the day of his operation.
"A lot of people have been calling and asking what they can do for me," McIngvale said in a video posted announcing his procedure. "The best thing you can do for me is pray, obviously, and if you need any furniture, come out and buy furniture. That'll ease a lot of my anxiety."
A leaky mitral valve, or mitral valve regurgitation, is the most common type of heart valve disease and occurs when a valve separating the chambers of the heart does not fully close, causing blood to leak between the chambers, according to the Mayo Clinic [ [link removed] ]. Without medical intervention, the condition can result heart rhythm problems or, in severe cases, heart failure.
Open-heart surgery is "usually the best solution for most valve conditions that cannot be managed with medication," according to Houston Methodist's treatment page for heart valve diseases [ [link removed] ].
The news of McIngvale's scheduled surgery came just months after he was hospitalized following a cellulitis diagnosis in late August. The infection caused a "temporary disconnect of cognitive abilities," McIngvale said in an interview with Fox26 shortly after he was released from the hospital [ [link removed] ]."
