New York has always been a home for immigrants from around the world.
However, regressive immigration policies and narratives have caused real harm to our communities, and our immigrant family members, friends, and neighbors are bracing for what’s to come.
So, what are the facts and why is it so critical to support immigrants in New York?
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has claimed expanded powers within 100 miles of the U.S. border or coastline—a zone that includes most of New York State. This means CBP agents can stop anyone to question them about their immigration status and collude with local police to intimidate immigrants far from the border.
The incoming Trump administration has promised to use Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to carry out mass deportations in major cities. These threats endanger the communities and cultures that are integral to the spirit of New York.
When the federal government turns away from justice, advocates must focus on state and local governments to make an impact. The NYIC has planned for this moment, and we are prepared for the fight ahead.
It is our responsibility to uphold New York’s legacy as a welcoming home for all. Over 4.5 million immigrants call New York State home, and over 1 million commute here every day to share their talents. Immigrants are New York.
At the NYIC, we are already hard at work. As Director of Community Engagement, I make sure that our community members know their rights with immigration enforcement and have the critical information they need to thrive. Every day, my team and I are on the ground building connections and growing our movement.
