John, if you have a car, you know that getting car insurance is a must.
We don’t think about it, let alone interrogate it. But now, we have to.
A shocking new study1 just revealed that car insurance costs in Majority-Black areas in Georgia are 11.1% higher than the state average.
Geico is the worst offender by far. According to the study, “Geico insurance premiums are 33.5% higher in Black-majority ZIP codes compared to white-majority ZIP codes, rising to a whopping 63.3% in areas with at least 70% Black residents compared to areas with 70% white residents”.
Car insurance companies are flattening folks by zip code and perpetuating an insidious form of redlining and white supremacy with this type of bullsh*t.
As the report goes on to state, it’s illegal for Insurers to use race as a factor to determine rates. But zip codes with more Black folks end up paying more even after taking driving records into account.
It’s beyond messed up that Black families are being punished for simply existing. Black families in Georgia are being forced to bear the brunt of years of white supremacy.
These car insurance companies are perpetuating modern forms of redlining. Please, sign our petition to hold them accountable and urge them to reverse their racist, zip-code-based pricing model.
In solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
