Say NO to KOSA… again!
------------------------------------------------------------
Remember KOSA, the dangerous internet censorship bill that claims to protect children? Its proponents are trying once again to push this bill through.

The newest proponents are none other than Elon Musk ([link removed]) and Linda Yaccarino of X (formerly Twitter). You should be wary of any social media regulation bill they support. With their encouragement, Senators Blumenthal (D-CT) and Blackburn (R-TN), the bill’s sponsors, are making one last push to shove this bill down our throats. There’s some concern that they may try to attach the bill as a rider to any mandatory funding bills, though House Speaker Johnson has qualms ([link removed]) about pushing a bill with such dire free-speech implications this hastily.

And make no mistake, the bill is still terrible for free speech. Despite its proponents’ claims that it’s now “content neutral”, it still restricts functionality related to multiple issues, so it remains dangerous to LGBTQ+, minorities, and anyone expressing dissent. Effectively the bill requires websites to identify people whom the service “knows is a minor ([link removed]) ” and restrict features that make certain content available to them. This can result in an age-gate (which might require proving your age and identity), but may also result in wholesale censorship of any content deemed too risky to host.

We continue to oppose KOSA and ask you to do the same.

Call your Members of Congress and tell them ([link removed]) : We still want you to vote NO on KOSA!

** Welcome, Senator Adam Schiff
------------------------------------------------------------
Speaking of calling your Members of Congress, we have a new one! Yesterday, Adam Schiff was inaugurated ([link removed]) as our new Senator. We are excited to work with Senator Schiff to oppose Trumpism, and we intend to hold him accountable for his votes.

** Thank you for coming to our Virtual General Meeting!
------------------------------------------------------------
It was so great to see new and regular faces at our Virtual General Meeting last Sunday. We had a turnout of around 30 people and we spent some time working on plans to better hold our state and local officials accountable.

We will be holding more meetings in the coming year. In the meantime, if you would like to join and do important work with us, we welcome you! Currently we are especially in need of volunteers to help with the following:

* Tracking state and local legislation and working with our state and local legislatures and Mayor-elect Lurie.
* Managing our social media and creating posts and graphics
* Making short-form videos to help educate people on our topics in an accessible way.

No experience is needed, and we will train you and provide everything you need. If you would like to help us, please contact us at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .

** Tell your Senators to fill every judicial vacancy NOW
------------------------------------------------------------
We need to continue pushing our senators to confirm as many pro-democracy judges as possible before the end of the year.

While the Senate has confirmed over 200 of President Biden’s highly qualified judicial nominees, there are 7 nominations pending, and more vacancies ([link removed]) for which President Biden still needs to nominate someone. Democrats need to act fast and work through the procedural steps to get this done.
Remember that these judges serve lifetime appointments—we need them to be filled by candidates who will uphold the Constitution. And we need them filled by the time Trump takes office.

Tell your senators ([link removed]) to make the most of their time and to fill every judicial vacancy now.

** Get used to reusing plastic bags… while you still can
------------------------------------------------------------
Next year, 2025, will be the last year in which you can get cheap plastic shopping bags from your local grocery store. A state law passed this year is closing the loophole that has allowed thicker “reusable” bags to take the place of the old, flimsy, single-use bags.

Many of us still treat today’s thicker bags the same as we did the flimsier bags—we use them once and throw them out. The time is now to start breaking that habit and start reusing your bags ([link removed]) .

There are sturdier bags that are clearly meant to be reusable, but cost more. Those will likely continue to be available once the ban takes effect. In the meantime, if you’re getting plastic bags with your grocery shopping out of habit, start holding onto those and start building the habit of bringing them with you to the store in the future.

** Don’t wait! Get your free COVID-19 tests and vaccines while you still can
------------------------------------------------------------
It’s unlikely that free COVID-19 tests ([link removed]) will last past the end of the Biden Administration, so if you haven’t ordered yours yet, the time to get on that is now.

Also, if you haven’t gotten this year’s COVID-19 vaccine yet, now’s the time. If you’re uninsured, you can still get it for free through California’s Bridge Access Program—but only through the end of the year. Insured Californians should be able to get the vaccine covered by their insurance.
