Gaza’s population of 2.2 million includes approximately 572,000 women and girls of reproductive age, making up about a quarter of the population.

Of these, around 50,000 are pregnant, with 5,500 expected to give birth in the next 30 days — over 160 births every day . An estimated 840 women are at risk of pregnancy or birth-related complications.

Many of these women have been cut off from safe delivery services as hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties, running out of fuel for generators, and facing critical shortages of medicines and essential supplies to manage obstetric emergencies.

A pregnant woman from northern Gaza, currently sheltering in a school, told UNFPA, “I couldn’t help but think about how my baby was feeling with every explosion. But every kick from my unborn child was giving me hope and strength.”

Despite the ongoing violence, women are still giving birth to new life in the most unimaginable circumstances. Meanwhile, the UN’s top humanitarian official has warned that the entire population of northern Gaza is at risk of death.
