Here's an update – and a thank you for your activism.
Not a lot of time? Here's a quick summary of the email:
H.R. 9495 could be used by the Trump administration to chill free speech and target nonprofits. Activism like yours encouraged over 40 representatives to change their votes. While it narrowly passed, our opposition worked.
Keep up the fight: Urge the Senate to stop this bill now. <[link removed]>

Friend –
We're reaching out to you with an update on H.R. 9495. <[link removed]>
If this bill passes the Senate, it would give the incoming Trump administration – and all future presidents – a new tool to stifle dissent. Any organization that criticizes government policies or powerful interests could potentially have its tax-exempt status stripped away arbitrarily by a designation that it is "terrorist supporting."
That's why the ACLU and over 350 organizations sent a letter to Congress opposing this dangerous legislation, expressing our deep concern over how this bill could be used to investigate, harass, and effectively dismantle any nonprofit organization – including news outlets, universities, and civil liberties organizations like ours.
It's also why our community flooded congressional phone lines and inboxes last month when the House voted. Hundreds of thousands of people like you flooded members with so many phone calls, texts, and emails that dozens of them changed their vote.
That is how our democracy is supposed to work, ACLU Supporter. While the bill narrowly passed the House, it's clear our opposition is working.
H.R. 9495 now advances to the Senate – and while those in favor of the bill may hope that the public outrage against this bill will fade, we are here to ensure no one forgets. You can help right now by sending a message to your Senators telling them to vote NO if this bill gets brought to the floor. <[link removed]>

The fact is we have the momentum of a movement on our side, ACLU Supporter. And we can and will keep showing up to stop this bill as soon as it makes moves in the Senate.
This is how wins happen. Together, as a community – one action at a time.
We will keep you updated as any further news unfolds on this issue, but for now, thank you so much again for your activism.
In solidarity,
The ACLU Team
