John,

One of the tenets of any type of financial reforms is that you look at how to broaden the base of people benefiting while adjusting rates.

That’s a minimum starting point for any conversation.

Human capital is the hallmark of California’s economy—it’s where the world has looked to us for guidance and leadership. It’s our state’s greatest strength looking to the future.

Donald Trump’s stated tariffs might benefit certain members of society, but they certainly don’t provide broad-based benefits, and will actively damage California’s workers and raise everyday costs for millions of people.

As a former state budget director and State Controller, we reliably found that tariffs directly cause higher prices and fewer choices for consumers, increased costs for business and industry, and stifled demand.

Agriculture, cars, computers – all costs that will soar from day one. By some estimates, 90% of these tariffs will impact our lower and middle wage workers, who will incur over half of these new costs.

Costs of goods and services will go up. Jobs will go down. That’s the opposite of meaningful, positive reform.

We must fight every step of the way to curb these tariffs, and as your Governor I will never allow Donald Trump or any extremists to continue to use California as a tool to play partisan politics, with destructive results. If you’re ready to stand up for Californians, please chip in $3 today to help us push back.

As the world's fifth-largest economy, California relies on cooperation with Mexico and Canada. Tariffs will have real impacts and consequences for all Californians. In fact, no state will be more affected by these reckless tariffs than ours.

But we don’t have to accept these potential tariffs as an inevitability. As your Governor, I won’t.

Together,

Betty
