Social Security and Medicare make the American Dream possible, folks.

It’s no accident that Americans can look forward to a well-earned retirement after decades of hard work; that seniors and disabled people won’t struggle to afford groceries, housing, and medical care; that the most vulnerable among us can live with dignity and security.

I know firsthand what these programs mean to families and communities. When I was young, both my parents were denied health coverage because of preexisting conditions.

Later, my mom suffered a heart attack, and my parents nearly lost their home as the medical bills piled up.

Luckily, my mom qualified for Medicare just in time. My family got the support we desperately needed, and my parents were able to bounce back from their time of hardship.

So when I hear Extreme Republicans deride these vital programs as “giveaways” and “handouts,” my resolve to protect them from GOP attacks only gets stronger.

But with an incoming MAGA Majority in both houses of Congress, the decades-long crusade to defund Social Security and Medicare is dangerously close to succeeding.

I won’t let them condemn millions of Americans to poverty and hardship.
