Fellow Kansan,

Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter! This week, I am in D.C., meeting with my fellow Kansans and voting on the House Floor. Follow me on social media to see more of my work for the Big First this week.

I do not serve in Congress to be a caretaker in the slow demise of America – I serve to fight and work to make it stronger. That's what I am doing while believing our brightest days are yet to come.

Yours in service,

The Week Ahead

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives will consider several priority bills from the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, of which I serve. One of those bills includes the Water Resources Development Act of 2024, in which I was able to secure funding for the levee project in Manhattan, Kansas and to initiate a study of the Ogallala Aquifer. Agriculture is the heartbeat of the Big First District, and agricultural producers across the state depend on the Ogallala for their livelihoods. I feel strongly that any solution for replenishing or maintaining the Aquifer should be driven by the producers who are directly impacted by its water supply, not federal bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. I also fought to include language in the bill that will amend storage contracts for Milford Lake and Perry Lake from compounding interest to simple interest. This will save Kansans nearly $41 million in interest payments and provide financial relief not only for Kansas, but for municipalities, industries, and water supply districts that utilize this storage.

The House will also consider legislation to stop the U.S. Department of Energy from forcing financially burdening standards on washing machines. Under the Biden Administration, energy costs have skyrocketed. This bill prevents federal bureaucrats from further burdening everyday Americans with overreaching, Green New Deal regulations.

Lastly, I will participate in a House Transportation & Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation hearing regarding the implementation of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2024. As FAA and the U.S. Department of Transportation begin enforcing critical provisions of the reauthorization, stakeholder perspectives are a crucial aspect to ensure that the government acts quickly and gets it right to benefit America.

Denouncing Washington's Fiscal Insanity

In November, America’s national debt climbed to $36 trillion. This is not normal. Washington, D.C. has a spending addiction, and it's often expected that Americans and future generations will pay for it. Today, if everyone decided to pitch in and tackle our debt, every American household would need to contribute almost $273,000 to bring our balance to zero. Compare that price tag to the average mortgage in the United States, which is about $245,000. This nonsense must stop.

It’s time to get our fiscal house in order and get our country back on track. This challenge won’t be easy, but America is worth it. It’s time to end the federal government’s out-of-control spending once and for all.

Combatting Communist China's Influence

Yesterday, I led my colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden to reject a recent proposal that would expand Communist China’s influence in the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization. If adopted, the new governance would extend the Director-General’s current maximum tenure from eight years to a decade, increase the Director-General’s already $300,000 salary, and give China more control over the U.S.-led World Food Programme.

We cannot afford to sit by idly – even in a time of political transition – while China positions itself to expand it’s influence over a body to which our nation belongs. President Biden needs to fight to position American farmers, ranchers, foresters, and agricultural producers as the global leader in food and agriculture and to represent our country’s production and ideals across the globe.

Fighting Against Overreaching Regulations

On June 28, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court overruled a 1984 decision in Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, which eliminated the doctrine known as Chevron deference, which allowed federal agencies, rather than Congress or courts, to interpret ambiguous statutes.

Congress makes laws – not unelected bureaucrats, so this week, I proudly cosponsored legislation to repeal burdensome, heavy-handed regulations that explicitly relied on Chevron and not Congressional intent. Under the Biden Administration, Kansans have suffered enough from overreaching regulations and sky-high cost of living. This legislation will restore power back to Americans and end the regulatory state several Washington Democrats have embraced for decades.

Jobs for America's Graduates - Kansas

Everyone's career journey is unique. That's why organizations like Jobs for America’s Graduates are so important. They help students overcome barriers to find success in their chosen career fields. Last week, I met with Jobs for America’s Graduates to share my career story, offer advice, and hear more about their professional interests. It’s inspiring to see the passion and determination they bring to the table, and I’m excited to see all the great things they will achieve.

Kansas Farm Bureau Town Hall

One of my favorite parts of serving in Congress is connecting with and advocating for farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers across the Big First. This weekend, I attended the Kansas Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in Manhattan, where I updated Kansas Farm Bureau on the latest happenings in Congress. We discussed the new Department of Government Efficiency, the end of Chevron deference, and the Farm Bill. I look forward to continuing to work for farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers in the 119th Congress.
