Dear John,

The end of 2024 is upon us, but our work to uplift our communities does not stop!

This year has been filled with many joyous moments and achievements for Immigrants Rising. Despite the uncertainties brought by political and legal challenges, we continue to make our communities stronger. Last month, we hosted webinars, like the Pre-Law 101 Webinar and Enhancing Culturally Competent Mental Health Care Access in the Undocumented Community, and participated in the post-election community discussion organized by Organizing Rooted in Abolition, Liberation & Empowerment (ÓRALE). And most recently, we welcomed the 2024-2025 cohort for the Mental Health Career Program and the inaugural Home is Here Opportunity Program!
Throughout the Mental Health Career Program (MHCP), our six undocumented aspiring therapist participants will receive direct career experience, mentorship, and a stipend to support their participation while accumulating hours toward their licensure in California by providing pro-bono mental health services to undocumented individuals.
The first-ever cohort of the Home is Here Opportunity Program, as part of the Home is Here Coalition, is comprised of 30 undocumented individuals — all from different parts of the country. They will empower and build resiliency in their immigrant communities while gaining leadership experience, professional development, one-on-one mentorship, and connection with other immigrant rights leaders.

  • The CA Dream Act Application (CADAA) opened on December 1. Since January 2024, the CADAA has asked questions on attendance and degree information that schools use to confirm students’ AB 540 eligibility. If you’re unsure if you meet AB 540 requirements, use our CA In-State Tuition Tool and check out our resources to help you navigate the process! If you are an educator in California, visit our AB 540 FAQ for best practices in implementing AB 540 in your school!

  • The most recent election may have brought up anxieties and uncertainty for many of us. Read our resource on Protecting Student Data to learn about policies in place and practices educators can do to protect students’ information, including their immigration status.

  • Are you an educator in California who wants to gain new knowledge and strategies and better guide undocumented students through higher education? Join our monthly Promising Practices Roundtables every second Thursday of each month, where you can also connect with other educators. Our next roundtable will be this Thursday, December 12 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. PT — register today!
