In another example of the Walz administration failing to properly oversee state tax dollars, a report by the Legislative Auditor found that the Department of Human Services failed to follow accounting practices and failed at recovering some $40 million dollars in overpayments in the State Medicaid program.
According to the OLA report, DHS “did not comply with the significant finance-related legal requirements we tested and generally had inadequate internal controls”. At a time when the state of Minnesota is facing a structural deficit of $5 billion dollars in our budget, we cannot afford to have government agencies refusing to do their fiscal responsibility.
The OLA states that the $40 million dollars in unrecovered payments is a conservative guess, and that “DHS did not begin recovery of the majority of these overpayments… until after the Office of the Legislative Auditor initiated this audit.”
The taxpayers of this state deserve better, and this shows that Governor Walz and Legislative Democrats fell asleep at the wheel the past two years. Instead of doing their job and properly auditing and recovering taxpayer money, we saw the Government go on an $18 billion dollar spending spree, and at the same time had the audacity to raise taxes in the process.
