It’s safe to say that the outcome of the 2024 election wasn’t what we wanted, and the next four years are going to be tough for America and the rest of the world. Donald Trump’s authoritarian impulses will be a threat to not just America but to liberal democracy all over the world, and we must be ready to stand in firm defense of our values. We’ll have a lot to say and do in the coming months and years, but for now, we put out a short statement from CNL Director Colin Mortimer and our steering committee on what lies ahead for us, which you can read here.
This election wasn’t a complete disappointment, however, and we want to take the time to highlight some of the victories for our chapters in America. First and foremost, the Seattle New Liberals helped get Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez over the finish line in Washington’s 3rd District, having taken the 5 hour round trip drive down to her district to knock doors - twice!
The DC New Liberals facilitated wins for Democrats across state lines, canvassing for Rep-Elect Sarah Elfreth in Maryland’s 3rd District, Maryland Senator-Elect Angela Alsobrooks, Rep-Elect Eugene Vindman in Virginia’s 7th District, and Virginia Senator Tim Kaine. The LA New Liberals endorsed a staunchly pro-housing candidate - Rep-Elect Laura Friedman - and supported Rep-Elect George Whitesides, flipping California’s 35th District from red to blue.

This year, we also nationally supported six candidates through the Center for New Liberalism Action fund, all of whom won their elections, including five of whom were in tough races. These candidates included Congressman Don Davis (NC-01), Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06), Congresswoman-Elect Janelle Bynum (OR-05), Congressman-Elect Eugene Vindman (VA-07), Congressman-Elect George Whitesides (CA-27), and North Carolina Lieutenant Governor-Elect Rachel Hunt. We couldn’t be more excited for these pragmatic center-left candidates to return to or take office in January and look forward to working more with them in the future.
In other good news, last month, we were excited to attend the launch of the bipartisan Congressional YIMBY Caucus, which is co-chaired by three of our good friends that we’ve done events with - Representatives Scott Peters (CA-50), Brittany Pettersen (CO-07), and Jake Auchincloss (MA-04). In this time of political uncertainty dominated by far-right populism and illiberalism there’s no better time to join our center-left movement by becoming a dues-paying member of the Center for New Liberalism.
