It wasn’t easy growing up the way I did. We didn’t have much.

What we did have was hope. Hope and hard work — that’s the American Dream. The expectation that, if you kept your nose clean and worked hard, you could get ahead in life. That you could make it. My mom sacrificed so much so my sisters and I could live the American Dream and become a teacher, a doctor, a business owner, and now, a Senator-elect.

As I traveled Arizona over the last two years, one of the most troubling things I saw was that parents continue to work hard for their children. They continue to sacrifice and put in the long hours. But they feel like the American Dream is further and further out of reach, and they worry that their kids are going to end up worse off than they were.

It’s clear that something has to change.

The American Dream got me through my toughest times. I still believe in it. But if we’re going to strengthen the American Dream and make sure it endures for our kids and grandkids, it’s time to try something different.

When I’m sworn in to the United States Senate in January I will be one of the youngest members serving in the chamber. The average age is about 65 — 20 years older than I am. Some people might see that as an excuse to sit back and let others take the lead. Not me. I’m excited to be a voice for the people who need one in the Senate.

The people of Arizona sent me there to get results. I intend to deliver for them, and you.
