Our advocacy for Endangered Waves never stops. 50,000+ actions were taken in support of our campaigns in 2024.

Save The Waves joined campaigns in Puerto Escondido, Mexico and Uluwatu, Indonesia to defend beloved waves under threat.

Our fight to protect Punta Conejo continued with a final proposal to the Mexican Government for the first-ever coastal “Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna ” in Oaxaca to preserve:

  • 3,503 acres of land

  • 6.5 miles of coastline

  • 3 surf breaks

  • 1277 acres of mangrove forest

  • 4 local communities

  • 500+ fishermen and salt workers

  • 40+ species of bird

  • 4 species of turtle, including the endangered Olive Ridley

In our World Surfing Reserves this year, we built stewardship and climate resilience capacity across the 13 Reserves, including:

12+ new surf breaks dedicated

under the Oriente Salvaje World Surfing Reserve in El Salvador, including Las Flores and Punta Mango

45 hectares of totora ponds restored

in the Huanchaco World Surfing Reserve to build climate resilience and support ancestral fishing practices

300+ tree seedlings planted

in 2 dunes restoration events to protect Guarda do Embau’s coastline from climate change

175+ native trees planted

in 2 restoration projects along the newly established trails in the Playa Hermosa World Surfing Reserve

300+ surfonomic surveys completed

that will determine the economic value of surfing in Santa Cruz and surfers perspectives on adaptation measures to climate change

We are pushing the boundaries of surf conservation to safeguard against climate change:

  • Launched the world’s first surf ecosystem insurance pilot project in El Salvador’s Oriente Salvaje World Surfing Reserve

  • Completed the first ever Surf Break Vulnerability Assessment, which identified which surf breaks in the Santa Cruz World Surfing Reserve are most vulnerable to the effects of sea level rise

  • Trained all World Surfing Reserves partners to collect and analyze critical climate vulnerability data of their surf ecosystems to make predictions

  • Co-published cutting edge research with Conservation International on the overlap between surf ecosystems and irrecoverable carbon

Support our work and help protect vital surf ecosystems across the globe!
