Hello from the State Capitol,

 

Minnesota’s economic outlook is in a freefall thanks to Democrat mismanagement of the state’s budget.

 

Under all-Democrat control of state government last session, they wasted a nearly $20 billion surplus, increased taxes on Minnesotans by another $10 billion, and increased state spending by nearly 40%. Because of this, we’ve now learned that a projected budget surplus for the upcoming fiscal year is slipping away, while a massive deficit is just around the corner.

 

Minnesota’s economic experts said the state will see a $616 million surplus for the Fiscal Year 2026-27 biennium. This is $1.1 billion less than the number they estimated in February. Projected reductions in income and sales tax revenues and higher spending for long-term care and special education needs are contributing to the revenue decline.

 

The outlook is even worse for the next budget cycle in Fiscal Year 2028-29, where a $5.1 billion budget deficit now looms.

 

Anyone with a lick of common sense could see this coming. The Democrats spent tens of billions of your tax dollars to increase the size of government while you were struggling to pay your bills, and now we’re on the verge of a financial mess. Spending reductions and eliminating government waste, fraud and abuse must be part of the long-term solution.
