About Our Experts

Tom Jensen — Director, Public Policy Polling
What Are the Polls Telling Us About the 2020 Elections?
Tom Jensen has been the Director of Public Policy Polling since 2007. During that time he has overseen thousands of polling projects, covering everything from Presidential and Senate races to County Commissioner and School Board races all over the country. He is the voice behind PPP’s popular Twitter account, which has more than 100,000 followers. In 2016 he was named by Rolling Stone as 1 of 16 Young Americans Shaping the 2016 Election, and after correctly predicting the winner of every state in the 2012 Presidential election, he was named by Business Insider as one of the 36 most powerful people in American politics. He has also been honored by Campaigns and Elections magazine as one of its ‘Rising Stars’ working in the industry. He is a popular public speaker, often presenting to business groups, universities, and other community organizations as well as a frequent expert commentator for TV, Radio, and other news organizations. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, he is an honors graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill.

Top of the Ticket — The Importance of North Carolina in the 2020 Election
Gene joined LCV in April 2006 after serving for more than a dozen years as a member of the LCV and LCVEF Boards of Directors and the LCV Political Committee. Under Gene’s leadership, LCV has played a lead role in the environmental community’s efforts to pass clean energy and climate policies. Prior to joining LCV, Gene worked for 21 years as the Executive Director of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG), the national lobbying office for state PIRGs across the country, where he led many national environmental issue campaigns. He has served on a number of national boards, including America Votes, Earth Share, the Partnership Project, the Beldon Fund, and the National Association for Public Interest Law. Gene is a graduate of Brown University and Georgetown University Law Center.

Rep. Brian Turner — House District 116
A Mountain Perspective to Protecting Our Environment
Brian Turner is currently serving his third term as state House Representative for North Carolina’s District 116 in Buncombe County. Since being elected in 2014, Brian has focused his efforts on supporting public education, protecting our state’s mountains and rivers, and growing local economies. He serves on the state’s Appropriations, Community Colleges, Wildlife Resources, and Environment committees.

Mary Maclean Asbill — Senior Attorney, Southern Environmental Law Center
Fighting Gen X and Coal Ash in the Courts
Mary Maclean has been with SELC since 2009, working for two years in their Georgia office before moving to North Carolina in 2011. She is a Senior Attorney while also serving as one of their lobbyists in the North Carolina General Assembly. Before SELC, Mary Maclean was the Director of the Turner Environmental Law Clinic at Emory University School of Law. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and University of Georgia School of Law, cum laude.

Dan Crawford — Director of Governmental Relations, NCLCV
The Path to a Green Caucus in North CarolinaDan joined NCLCV in 2008, after serving for several years on our Conservation PAC committee. Before joining NCLCV, he lobbied for ElectriCities of NC, a non profit governmental agency that represents cities and towns that operate their own electric distribution systems—bringing a unique perspective to his advocacy efforts on energy issues. Prior to this, he worked for Congressman Brad Miller (NC-13) for nearly five years. In this capacity he worked as finance coordinator, field director, and campaign coordinator across three campaigns, and as district liaison in his congressional office. Dan brings a particularly political perspective to his work with NCLCV, which makes him well suited to enforcing a strong cycle of accountability. He is a graduate from NC State University with a BA in Political Science. A native North Carolinian from Asheville, Dan emphasizes that he is an environmentalist by birth, but with two little girls at home, he is committed to holding our legislators accountable for protecting our environment.
