Dear Friend,
As the year draws to a close, I like to reflect on what I’m grateful for from the past year and set my sights on the road ahead. Let me take a moment here to share a few things that fill me with gratitude and hope.
Colorado’s Commitment to Protecting Equality and Your Rights
This November, Colorado reaffirmed its commitment to equality. We enshrined the right to access abortion care in our state constitution and removed an outdated ban on same sex marriage. The overwhelming support for both are powerful signs of progress—and a clear demonstration of Coloradans’ shared values and firm commitment to equal rights for all.
Progress on the Opioid Crisis
The opioid crisis continues to devastate families and communities. For the first half of 2024, however, Colorado saw a decline in overdoses and overdose deaths for the first time in a long time. As Colorado’s Attorney General, it’s my duty to take on irresponsible companies that fueled this epidemic. That's why, all over our state, I have joined with local leaders who have stepped up to ensure that the almost $800 million in settlement funds we are bringing to Colorado are being invested thoughtfully and transparently. While there is more work to do, our nationally recognized work is making a difference and points the way to more progress.
Taking on Big Tech
This summer, we achieved a landmark victory when a court agreed with us that “Google is a monopolist and acted like one.” Now, we’re working to develop effective remedies that will foster fair competition in the internet search and search advertising markets. I recently talked to KOA [[link removed]] about the importance of this work.
An Inspiring Story of Civics Leadership
A few weeks ago, I wrote to you about the privilege I had to mentor Joseph Drexler, a high school freshman from Buena Vista, for the National Civics Bee. Recently, Joseph reflected on the importance of civics education and listening to others. His wisdom inspires hope for the future. [[link removed]]
There’s a lot of negativity out there. But we have cause to be optimistic. Together, I know we can continue to stand up for freedom, opportunity, and the shared values that define us. Thank you for being part of this work, and I look forward to building on our progress in the year ahead.
With gratitude and hope,
Phil
