I got a sex education bill passed in my state in 2024, and I couldn’t have done it without Advocates for Youth.
Dear John,
I’m Sriya, and I’m a youth activist. It’s been a tough year for activists, and we know the road ahead will be hard. But I’m proof that political change is possible. I got a sex education bill passed in my state in 2024, and I couldn’t have done it without Advocates for Youth.
In high school, I didn’t learn enough about menstruation. That was a problem. I was anxious and scared about my period, with nowhere to turn but medical websites with conflicting information. I wanted better for students in California. I proposed a bill through a California process that allows anyone in the state to suggest legislation. Then, I mobilized young people across the state to support it. The bill passed, and now, every student in California will get the information they need about menstrual health.
Throughout my journey, Advocates for Youth worked alongside me to get the Know Your Period bill passed. They shared tactics for working with elected officials. They helped my group strategize and respond to setbacks in the process. They supported me as I worked to organize young people in support of the bill.
At Advocates’ Youth Activist Institute, an annual conference bringing together young people from across the country, I met others who are activists like me. We learned from each other and made a commitment to our organizing work. It was inspiring and empowering, and I can’t wait to keep working for health and justice in my state. I have a new idea for a bill, and I’ll get that one passed too.
I am grateful to Advocates for Youth and grateful to people like you, who support our work. As we go into 2025, we’re going to need to stay strong and work together. Please donate today!
Cheers,
Sriya
