John,

The time for sadness is officially over. It’s time to get to work.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been anchoring my actions and conversations around a quote from a personal hero of mine — the brilliant and principled leader, Nelson Mandela. He once said, “I never lose. I either win or learn.”

Like you, I am deeply troubled that Donald Trump was reelected as president of the United States. So as we head into a second Trump administration and a Republican-led government — if we reflect on President Mandela’s quote — we have an obligation to learn.

At the same time, we should not lose sight of the important gains made at the state level. When we asked you to be the cavalry, you stepped up. When we asked you to dig deep and give everything you could to protect democracy, you doubled down.

Leaders like you are the most important piece of this movement for fair maps. So as I revisit President Mandela’s quote, I’m hoping to learn from you .

I would be grateful if you’d share your thoughts on this election cycle with me. What should I be learning from you and your community? What answers are you still searching for? And if you have a question about the 2024 results or where we go from here, I’d be happy to share my perspectives. [[link removed]]

I am confident in the NDR PAC’s strategy and our plans to protect fair maps, combat ongoing gerrymandering, and prepare for upcoming redistricting battles — and I hope you are, too. We’ve already seen these efforts pay off. But that doesn’t preclude us from pausing to reflect, and to learn.

I look forward to reading your responses over the next couple of days. I’ll answer some questions here over email, and I’ll work to absorb all the lessons you’re learning across the country.

There’s no team I’d rather be working alongside as we head into this next phase. We, more than any generation in history, are in control of our own destiny. We are the stewards of our democracy. And we have it in our power to shape where the journey goes next.

Please take a moment to share your lessons or submit a question so we can continue to do everything we can to safeguard democracy from folks who want to tear it down. [[link removed]]

Thank you,

Eric H. Holder, Jr.
82nd Attorney General
