We can't afford to sit this out.? ? ? ? ? Friend ? this situation is moving very quickly. The House just passed a major new COVID-19 relief bill. Included in it is a key amendment that would block the White House from distorting or shelving scientific studies for political reasons.
This has huge implications for the fight against climate change and COVID-19. The amendment, called the Scientific Integrity Act, has bipartisan support ? this has a real shot. What happens next is up to us ? and we need to hear from you. Trump is hell-bent on discrediting scientists. He is desperate to keep up the pretense that only he knows best. He will not let this bill pass without a fight.
We're turning to our members for help. If everyone reading this email pitched in ? even just $5 ? we'd blow through our fundraising goal and go big with this campaign. Please, friend ? donate today. We can't do this without you.
We're gearing up for one hell of a fight over this amendment and, frankly, the entire COVID-19 relief package. Can you help? A major donor is triple-matching every contribution before the end of the month. Please donate today ? [link removed]
This amendment requires agencies to draft policies that prevent misrepresenting or suppressing scientific research their employees produce. Government scientists would also be able to file petitions if they felt their work was being improperly concealed from the public.
President Trump's multi-agency assault on science has hinged on efforts to distort, bury, and even rewrite credible public scientific findings. That includes his absurd climate change denial, his sidelining of scientists in the COVID-19 fight, and the cover-up over evidence that the American people are being exposed to dangerous toxins like mercury and PFAS chemicals.
With the amendment passed in the House, the fight is now in the Senate. When the full stimulus package gets to the Senate, we expect Mitch McConnell to do everything in his power to torpedo the amendment.
Our policy and lobbying team is working furiously to make sure this amendment stays in the final bill that goes to Trump's desk. While McConnell claims the full package is "dead on arrival," the worsening COVID-19 economic situation means more stimulus is needed and McConnell will need to negotiate.
NOW is the time to make a difference. Now is the time to join this fight. The COVID-19 crisis is fundamentally changing the future of environmental policy in our country ? it's a moment when the environmental movement cannot stay silent.
Please, please, friend ? we can't sit this one out. A donor is triple-matching every gift through the end of this month ? even $5 will go a long way. Make a donation now ? [link removed]
Throughout this entire crisis, Trump and his administration have deliberately ignored the advice of scientists and experts in the field ? and thereby made the problem exponentially worse: Despite COVID-19 being a respiratory illness, Trump rolled back federal limits on air pollution, effectively making it harder for people to breathe. The White House has pushed to cut funding to energy assistance programs, despite the fact that low-wealth families are disproportionately affected by this crisis.Trump is calling to quickly lift stay-at-home orders, despite scientific experts' warnings that a second wave of infections could be imminent if we reopen too early. The House stimulus bill ? in addition to protecting science ? fights Trump tooth-and-nail against all of these egregious attacks. We must push McConnell and the Senate to embrace this relief package. There is no other choice.
We need to light up the phones in the Capitol. We need to mount aggressive pressure campaigns. We need to raise hell. This will take a huge organizing push, but with your help ? we can do this.
Please, donate today, friend. Every contribution is being triple-matched right now ? [link removed]
