Donald Trump’s transition team announced it signed an agreement with the Department of Justice to allow his nominees to receive FBI background checks.
This comes after leaders across the ideological spectrum criticized Trump for attempting to bypass the FBI screening process.
And while the agreement says the FBI will conduct background checks for a nominee’s security clearance, it does not specify whether private companies will be involved in conducting the checks, that every nominee will be subject to those checks or that the Senate will receive the background checks for their consideration of nominees.
That’s why CREW has requested any and all versions of the agreement and any documents related to its signing, including any contracts with or communications about the private vendors the Trump transition team considered to perform the checks.
John, the specifics of the agreement and the rationale behind the departure from the traditional vetting process are important, and must be made public immediately as the Senate confirmation hearings for nominees rapidly approach.
The American people deserve to know whether the Senate will be able to thoroughly evaluate a nominee’s fitness for office before confirming them to a position of power.
