Salaam,
For over five decades, the Assad regime oppressed Syrians, devastated their country, and undermined stability across the Middle East. Today, we celebrate the end of this regime and honor the resilience and courage of the Syrian people in achieving this historic victory. Bashar al-Assad’s removal marks the beginning of a new chapter—one that paves the way for rebuilding, reconciliation, and the pursuit of a democratic and prosperous future. This moment is a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Syrian people in their quest for freedom, dignity, and self-determination.
As Muslim Americans, we uphold a set of core principles that guide our perspective on the Middle East and beyond. Among the most important are the protection of civilians and the right to self-determination. The international community must not forget that in 2011, the regime’s violent suppression of peaceful protests thrust Syria into a devastating conflict characterized by chemical attacks, indiscriminate bombings, and deliberate starvation tactics. These atrocities inflicted deep scars and caused severe harm to religious and ethnic minorities, betraying the Syrian people’s aspirations for justice and freedom.
Now is the time for the international community, including the U.S., to act decisively; to prioritize civilian protection, expand humanitarian aid, and support a political transition that includes a clear pathway to free and fair elections. In order to see real change from this historic moment, Syrians must be empowered to build a future for themselves that embraces its diverse communities and their contributions to the region.
Emgage Action urges the U.S. government to:
1. Support Syrian Civilians: Avoid further violence and safeguard vulnerable communities. 2. Increase Humanitarian Aid: Increase funding to address urgent needs and long-term recovery. 3. Advance a Political Solution: Support a democratic transition led by and representing all Syrians. 4. Ensure Accountability: Bring perpetrators of war crimes to justice to heal the wounds of war.
Today marks a turning point, signaling renewed hope for a brighter future. Let us honor the sacrifices of the Syrian people by building a just, peaceful, and democratic Syria. To support the work we do, please consider donating. |
