John,
Congress has until December 31st to pass an updated Farm Bill that will expand agriculture, climate, and conservation programs, aid rural families and communities, and improve food assistance programs. Or, it could pass a bill that completely eliminates them.
With just weeks left in the year, our Democratic leaders are looking to act as soon as possible. But there’s a major problem: House Republicans have proposed a $30 billion cut to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) funding over the next 10 years. Millions of American children and families rely on nutrition assistance benefits.
Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, has introduced the Rural Prosperity and Food Security Act. Stabenow’s bill would improve SNAP benefits can to cover the costs of a healthy diet, include Puerto Rico in the SNAP program, remove the lifetime ban on nutrition assistance for individuals convicted of a drug related felony, expand access for college students facing hunger, protect victims of theft of SNAP benefits, and increase funding for food banks.
Please sign on now to demand that Congress act now to reject any cuts to SNAP in the proposed Farm Bill.
Some Republican policymakers are already talking about drafting legislation to take nutrition assistance benefits away from millions of Americans. We need to act now, before Trump takes office and the new class of Congress is sworn in.
All Americans deserve access to the food and nutrition they need to stay healthy and thrive, especially our children. Congress must pass Farm Bill legislation that expands and protects access to quality food for all.
Thank you,
Democratic Values
