Democrats are losing the working class,
John.
I’m not trying to be an alarmist, but that’s what the data shows after
this year’s election. Take a look at this chart that I shared with some
fellow Democrats in Congress:

We need to get back to our roots as a party for the working class, and I
need your help to make that happen. [ [link removed] ]If you can, please pitch in

This year we lost many voters who are typically considered part of our
base, and this wasn’t the first time in recent years that’s happened.
Aside from losing all of the swing states, every state besides my home
state of Washington shifted redder this year.
There’s no way around it: This happened because Democrats were seen as
defenders of a broken status quo. Poor and working people – our base who
have long been taken for granted – are angry (rightfully so) with a system
that is rigged against them. Meanwhile, Donald Trump promised to blow up
the system.
Part of it was the fact that too many Democrats embraced wealthy donors
instead of committing to get big money out of politics. Many working class
voters were left with the impression that we wouldn’t stand up to
corporate interests.
So despite this year’s setbacks, there is a clear path forward: We need to
rebuild our brand and people’s belief that we are on the side of poor and
working people.
Over the next four years, we need to be both an opposition party to
Trump’s chaos and cruelty, but also a proposition party that has a clear,
bold economic agenda. We need to lead on health care, getting big money
out of politics, and more.
Just look at the ballot initiatives that passed with big majorities in
states where Trump won. We saw multiple Trump states vote to raise the
minimum wage, protect abortion rights, implement paid sick leave, and
more.
An agenda focused on supporting poor and working people is clearly
popular. We just need to rebuild voters’ trust and belief that Democrats
will actually deliver on that agenda when we get the chance.
I’m doing everything I can to make that happen,
