BIG NEWS, John!
We just had a MAJOR victory in California: Los Angeles passed a Brady-supported procurement ordinance that will enforce gun industry accountability and help reduce gun violence in the area.
|
This is me representing Brady with Councilmember Paul Krekorian, the author of our Procurement Ordinance.
But what does a procurement ordinance mean and how does it work?
Last year, Brady launched an investigation that discovered that millions of California taxpayer dollars were spent by government agencies purchasing firearms and ammunition from gun dealers that had been cited for violations of federal gun laws — sometimes repeatedly. This means that taxpayer money was funding gun dealers that have been cited for irresponsible and unlawful practices that we know contribute to the gun trafficking and crime that fuels America’s gun violence epidemic.
And that’s why this new ordinance is so important. It will ensure that taxpayers — the number one purchaser of firearms in America — are not having their money spent at gun dealers known for business practices that jeopardize public safety. In turn, gun dealers will be incentivized to comply with firearm laws and safe dealing practices, reducing the number of firearms directed to illegal markets, and helping stem America’s gun violence epidemic.
Thanks to Brady’s advocacy and support, Los Angeles now joins cities like Oakland, San Francisco, and San Diego that have passed ordinances to ensure the responsible procurement of firearms. Importantly, our work in California serves as a model for other cities and states to follow — and that’s why I’m reaching out today, John.
We at Brady are gearing up to work with more localities nationwide to implement this same approach. We have a track record of success and a model to follow, but what we also need is your support. Will you consider fueling Brady’s life-saving work with a gift today? Your contribution will help us continue to make vital progress at the local level and save lives in 2025 and beyond.

Brady Responds to Supreme Court Oral Arguments About Gender Affirming Medical Care |
“As Justice Sotomayor highlighted at today’s oral argument, this case is a grim reminder of the devastating impacts this heinous piece of legislation would have on the mental and physical wellbeing of transgender youth — heightening the risk of gun violence for young people in Tennessee.”
— Shira Feldman, Director of Constitutional Litigation at Brady

Brady supporters in front of the Supreme court during the United States v. Rahimi case.
This week, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in United States v. Skrmetti. This case centers around a law that would make it unlawful for doctors in Tennessee to prescribe puberty blockers or hormones as part of gender-affirming medical care for minors, even when individual patients, their parents, and their healthcare providers agree that such care is medically necessary.
Brady, Team ENOUGH, our youth-led initiative, and partners in the movement filed an amicus brief in the case, urging the Court to strike down this Tennessee law, which could have devastating impacts on the mental and physical well-being of transgender youth, heightening the risk of gun violence for young people in Tennessee.
Brady is committed to addressing the core drivers of gun violence through a public health approach. That includes protecting the dignity, freedom, and mental well-being of Tennessee’s young people. As we await a decision in this case, please learn more by reading our press release.

Brady Meets With “Legislators for Safer Communities” |
This week, Brady Chief Programs and Policy Officer Christian Heyne and Brady Director of Federal Policy Mark Collins joined Legislators for Safer Communities to meet with federal lawmakers to discuss gun violence prevention in 2025 and beyond.
Legislators for Safer Communities is a nonpartisan coalition made up of hundreds of state lawmakers dedicated to protecting their communities from gun violence. This group of leaders, which includes survivors of gun violence, represent diverse communities that experience many different forms of gun violence.
Brady was honored to join them to meet with members of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and gun violence prevention champions like Sen. Chris Murphy, Sen. Dick Durbin, and Sen. Patty Murray. We also had the chance to meet with the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention to discuss exciting initiatives and projects at the state level that will help end the gun violence epidemic in America.
As we transition to a new administration at the federal level, and likely an uphill battle in Congress, our work on the state level will be more important than ever before. We thank Legislators for Safer Communities for including Brady and look forward to continuing our work together to make life-saving progress in states nationwide.
If you want to get involved with our state legislative work, please consider joining a Brady chapter and help make a difference in your community! |
