Legislative Update
Dear Neighbors,
This week has been filled with preparations for the upcoming legislative session, which begins on January 14. The historic 67-67 tied legislature promises a unique dynamic, requiring bipartisan collaboration to pass legislation. After two years of one-party control, this balance will serve all Minnesotans by encouraging thoughtful debate and cooperation.
*Budget Challenges from One-Party Control*
The last two years have brought significant frustration as Democrats, with one-party control, pushed through sweeping measures without proper debate or accountability. Last session ended with a 1,400-page omnibus bill, rushed through without review or input from Republicans or the Minnesotans we represent. This unchecked spending spree consumed the entire $18 billion surplus, expanded government by nearly 40%, and raised taxes by $10 billion.
On Wednesday, the state’s Management and Budget office released its latest forecast, revealing the consequences of this reckless spending. While the current fiscal year shows a small balance, the projection for fiscal year 2028-29 predicts a staggering $5 billion deficit. Here's a closer look:

This is unsustainable. Responsible governance means ensuring spending does not exceed revenues while implementing policies that benefit Minnesotans rather than burden them.
With a tied State House, we now have the opportunity to bring fiscal responsibility back to St. Paul. I am committed to reducing costs, ensuring efficient and transparent government operations, and eliminating waste and fraud to safeguard your hard-earned tax dollars.
Committee Assignments
The new balance in the legislature means committees will have equal representation from both parties, with co-chairs and equal membership. I am honored to serve as Vice Chair of the Agriculture Finance and Policy Committee.
As someone with deep roots in farming, I am eager to advocate for Minnesota’s agricultural community. Farming is the backbone of our economy, providing food, jobs, and vitality to rural areas. I will work to support farm operations, expand markets, and encourage innovation while preserving our state’s natural resources. Together, we can secure a strong future for Minnesota agriculture.

*Connecting Locally*
Recently, I joined the Winsted Chamber of Commerce, one of the most active and vibrant chambers in the district. During our discussion, I shared updates about the new legislative balance and its potential to prevent extreme measures like sanctuary state policies and physician-assisted suicide from moving forward.
We also addressed the challenges small businesses face under laws like Paid Leave, which could drive up costs for families already struggling with inflation. I encouraged everyone to stay connected by signing up for my legislative updates and reminded them that I am here to answer any questions or address concerns.
*Stay Engaged*
